Blue 52 — by Michael Loderstedt

Your song has been recorded
over three decades, Blue 52.
Singing into hydrophones dangling
from submarines, parsing out the sounds
of other whales, drone of ship engines, tectonic
forces grinding undersea.

They’ve named you Blue 52, your call
an unnatural 52 hertz, twice frequency,
inaudible to all baleen whales, Blue & Fin.
Perhaps an abnormal voice
box, an unknown key––

Yet no ship has ever seen you,
and no other whale can hear you.

Blue 52, for whose ears do you sing?
Will you promise to never stop?
Your ghost song echoes across
sea-canyon walls, chorus of loneliness.
Ocean bowl of sound unheard.
